Solastalgia
Solastalgia describes the feeling of losing the comfort of home due to environmental changes beyond one's control. The feeling of homesickness even though you are still at home. For those who feel comfort and belonging by the sea, the destruction of the marine environment causes distress and a sense of powerlessness.
Plastic waste disrupts the natural processes in the ocean. Debris in a giant organism – fish and marine mammals get stuck in ghost nets and other plastic structures dumped in the ocean. Microplastics can now even be found in fish, which humans also ingest by eating fish.
This model is a mix of familiar shapes of man-made plastic objects and textures of barnacles - which are abundant in the North Sea and can also be found on plastic waste that has been underwater for some time.
